General Pet Care FAQs
What is holistic veterinary medicine?
Holistic veterinary medicine is a whole-body approach to animal health that combines conventional diagnostics and treatment with alternative therapies such as acupuncture, chiropractic, Ayurveda, botanical medicine, and nutritional counseling. Rather than only treating symptoms, the goal is to find and correct the underlying imbalance affecting your pet.
Do you offer traditional veterinary care as well as holistic care?
Yes. Animal Wellness and Rehab Center is a full-service animal hospital. Along with holistic therapies, we provide wellness exams, vaccinations, surgery, dental care, digital X-rays, ultrasound, and in-house laboratory testing, so your pet can receive integrative care in one place.
What makes your rehabilitation facility unique?
Our facility was designed with animal rehab in mind. We are one of the only practices in Washington offering an underwater treadmill, a land treadmill, and a warm water pool together, along with laser therapy and shockwave therapy as part of our rehabilitation therapy programs.
What conditions can acupuncture and chiropractic care help my pet with?
Acupuncture and veterinary chiropractic are commonly used for arthritis, intervertebral disc disease, back and neck pain, nerve injuries, hip dysplasia, and mobility loss. Acupuncture can also support pets with skin conditions such as lick granulomas and allergic dermatitis, and both therapies pair well with pain management plans.
What is Ayurveda in veterinary medicine?
Ayurveda is an ancient system of medicine from India that focuses on balance. We evaluate your pet’s constitution, or dosha (Vata, Pitta, and Kapha), and use herbal supplements, diet, exercise, and massage to restore balance and support long-term health. You can learn more on our Ayurveda in Veterinary Medicine page.
Can holistic therapies help my pet recover after surgery?
Yes. Rehabilitation exercises, hydrotherapy, laser therapy, and acupuncture can help reduce pain, rebuild muscle, and restore range of motion after procedures such as orthopedic surgery or cruciate ligament repair. We create a recovery plan tailored to your pet’s surgery and activity level.
How often should my pet have a wellness exam?
Most healthy adult pets should be seen at least once a year. Puppies, kittens, and senior pets usually benefit from more frequent visits. Regular preventative care helps us establish a health baseline and catch problems early, before they become serious.
When should I bring in a new puppy or kitten?
Schedule a visit as soon as possible after bringing your new pet home. Our puppy and kitten care visits include a nose-to-tail exam, a vaccination schedule, parasite prevention, and guidance on nutrition, behavior, and spay and neuter timing.
Do you care for senior pets?
Yes. Our geriatric care services include senior exams and blood work to monitor kidney, liver, and thyroid function, along with gentle holistic therapies that help aging pets stay comfortable and mobile in their golden years.
How important is dental care for my pet?
Very important. Most dogs and cats over three years old have some degree of dental disease, which can affect the heart, liver, and kidneys if left untreated. Professional dental cleanings, digital dental X-rays, and at-home care help keep your pet’s mouth healthy.
Can you help with my pet’s skin problems or allergies?
Yes. Our dermatology and allergy testing services help identify environmental and food allergies, infections, and parasites. We combine conventional treatment with diet changes and holistic support to relieve itching and improve skin health.
Do you help with behavior problems?
Yes. Our behavior management services address issues such as anxiety, aggression, destructive habits, and house soiling. We look at medical causes first, then work with you on a practical plan to bring peace back to your home.
Do you microchip pets?
Yes. Microchipping is a quick, safe procedure that greatly improves the chance of your pet being returned home if they’re ever lost. It can be done during a routine visit.
Can you provide health certificates for travel?
Yes. We have a USDA-accredited veterinarian who can complete health certificates for domestic and international travel. Requirements vary by destination, so please contact the embassy or airline early and call us to plan your pet’s exam.
Do you offer hospice and end-of-life care?
Yes. Our hospice and euthanasia services focus on keeping your pet comfortable and supporting your family through a difficult time with compassion and respect. Please let us know about any special requests.
Do you have an on-site pharmacy?
Yes. Our pharmacy carries prescription medications along with supplements and nutraceuticals, so you can pick up what your pet needs before you leave the hospital.
What payment options do you accept?
Payment is due at the time of service. We accept cash, checks, Visa, Mastercard, Discover, American Express, and CareCredit, and we’re happy to help with pet insurance questions. Visit our payment options page for details.
What should I bring to my pet’s first visit?
Please bring any previous medical and vaccination records, a list of current medications and supplements, and details about your pet’s diet. You can save time by completing our new client forms before your appointment. Visit our new clients page to learn more.
