Your pet seems fit and healthy. Do you really need to take your pet to the vet for a check-up? Yes, and you need to take your pet to the veterinarian’s office throughout the year for other reasons. Our veterinarians at Animal Hospital of Lynnwood would like to explain why.
Wellness Exams
Just as it is important for you to get a check-up from your doctor every year, it is even more important to get your pet a check-up every year. After all, your pet cannot talk and tell the veterinarian if anything is wrong. A wellness exam paints a full picture of how well your pet is doing and what needs to be done to prevent future health problems. Bloodwork helps us detect certain illnesses before your pet starts showing symptoms.
Dental Cleanings
Dogs and cats are just as prone to gum disease and tooth decay as people. Even if you brush your pet’s teeth every day, which you should be doing, your pet still needs a dental cleaning by your vet to make sure your pet’s mouth is thoroughly clean of plaque. We can also check for other signs of problems.
Vaccinations
Although yearly boosters can be done during your pet’s wellness exam, the initial round of vaccinations requires about three visits in a year. Most core vaccines for dogs and cats, and the canine distemper vaccine for ferrets, require three doses to work.
Senior Pets
Older pets need to go to the vet at least twice per year because they tend to go through changes that are so subtle that they may not be noticeable to the owner. Senior pets also tend to grow lumps and bumps that need checking out.
How Long Has It Been Since Your Pet’s Last Pet Exam?
